Frequently Asked Questions
What are the most important qualities that Stewart Leadership looks for in a candidate?
At Stewart Leadership, we look for two key qualities before inviting someone to join our team.
First, they need to be kind, considerate, generous, caring, and client-centric. The right people are not interested in bringing the glory to the themselves, but genuinely interested in helping others.
Second, we look for people who have a drive to succeed and the internal motivation to push themselves to produce amazing work across all aspects of their role including communication, design, and delivery.
What is the compensation structure?
This role offers uncapped sales commission compensation (as a 1099 independent contractor), initial monthly payment (3-4 months) as you are building your book of business, and multiple performance bonuses tied to collaboratively set annual targets which take market potential, historical performance, and growth goals into account. Business development expenses (e.g., travel, events, tools) are fully reimbursed by the company.
How realistic are the sales targets and commission potential?
Is this truly a remote/virtual position, and what are the location preferences or travel expectations?
Yes, this is a fully remote/virtual role with a high degree of autonomy and no required office presence.
We prefer candidates home-based near a major metro market, for example in the Midwest (e.g., Milwaukee, Chicago, Minneapolis), the West (e.g., Denver, Phoenix, Seattle, San Francisco) or the Southeast (e.g., Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Orlando) for easier access to regional prospects and events.
Overnight travel is estimated at 25% or less, primarily for client visits, conferences, or semi-annual team meetings (in-person or hybrid).
What does "1099 Contractor status, but position is full-time" mean? Are there benefits?
This is a full-time commitment (typically 40+ hours/week focused on pipeline building, client relationships, and some delivery) structured as a 1099 independent contractor for flexibility and entrepreneurial alignment.
As such, there are no traditional employee benefits (e.g., health insurance, 401(k)), but you gain autonomy, tax advantages, and direct upside from commissions.
Many candidates from professional services backgrounds prefer this model for its simplicity and greater growth potential in a boutique firm.
What is the LEAD NOW! certification, and is it required before starting or can it be obtained on the job?
LEAD NOW! is Stewart Leadership's proprietary, research-based leadership development model and certification program.
It provides a structured framework (with assessments, workshops, and tools) for executive coaching, team development, and organizational alignment.
Certification is preferred (and can strengthen your credibility when selling/delivering solutions), but it's not required at hire. You can complete the virtual certification program (typically two half-days) shortly after joining if needed.
How much of the role is pure sales/business development vs. hands-on consulting/coaching?
The role is primarily business development. Approximately 80% of your time will be focused on prospecting, pipeline acceleration via digital marketing, events, calls/visits, email sequences, and account management of 25+ key clients, 25+ potentials, and 50+ prospects.
The remaining 20% of your time provides the opportunity to step in as an executive consultant/coach for select clients where your skills align best, leveraging your background in leadership/OD/change to deliver high-value work directly.
This balance appeals to candidates who enjoy both hunting for new business and occasional delivery without being full-time billable.
What kind of support and resources are provided for sales success?
What does success look like in the first 6-12 months?
In the first six months, you'll focus on learning about Stewart Leadership's services and products (especially the LEAD NOW! model), building your pipeline in your targeted geography, nurturing existing/prospective accounts, and closing initial deals to gain momentum.
By 12 months, success means hitting/exceeding annual sales targets, managing a strong portfolio of key clients, contributing to company growth, and potentially delivering some coaching/consulting engagements.
This role is structured to reward consultative selling, relationship-building, and consistent activity over short-term quotas.
