Four Factors for Designing Hybrid Work
Designing a hybrid work arrangement comes down to four factors rather than a single company-wide rule: the jobs and tasks themselves, employee preferences, how projects and workflow get coordinated, and fairness across the organization. Weighing all four is what makes an arrangement fit the team it is built for, instead of defaulting to one policy for everyone.

Hi. The question of the day: how do I design the right hybrid work arrangement, the right way to bring people back into the office, or keep them virtual, in any work setting?
Some great research by Linda Gratton, published in Harvard Business Review, identifies four specific factors to consider when figuring out what hybrid work arrangement would be best for you, your team, and your organization.
First, consider the jobs and tasks. Ask yourself what drives productivity the most. As you look at each job and task, make sure that whatever work arrangement you have facilitates and encourages the value that needs to come from it.
Second, look at employee preferences, and consider creating employee personas. Identify the different personas and preferences your employees might have. Some really thrive in a purely virtual environment. Others thrive in person. Others thrive somewhere in the middle. Consider those preferences as you figure out the arrangement that works best.
Third, look at projects and workflow. Ask yourself how you coordinate well and effectively, and how you can redesign processes to make them more streamlined, particularly in a hybrid environment.
And fourth, consider inclusiveness and fairness. Ask yourself how you solicit feedback from others, so you can hear from all levels of the organization, and especially from those who are impacted the most.
Use these four factors to answer the question: what work arrangement is best for you and your organization?
